Fungi That Create Spalted Wood

If you have ever seen the intricate patterns and colors that fungi create, you know why spalted wood is so coveted by woodworkers. Dr. Seri Robinson’s talk came highly recommended by the Oregon Mycological Society and she will present via Zoom on Thursday evening, April 20, 6:30-8 PM at our in-person meeting at Trinity Episcopal Church, downtown Bend.

Dr. Seri Robinson, associate professor of wood anatomy at Oregon State University, will discuss the ancient art and modern science of spalting – the process by which a select group of wood decay fungi color wood. Spalted wood has been used in Western European marquetry for centuries and is a common component in modern woodworking. The unique nature of the fungal pigments have also found relevance in science, from solar cells to textile dyes. Join Dr. Robinson on a six hundred year journey from ancient art to modern scientific marvel via an understudied and under appreciated group of fungi—the elusive spalting fungi.”
