Aureoboletus mirabilis
Because of the many healthy mountain and western hemlock in our local forests, it isn’t surprising to find the Admirable Bolete in the fall. This dark and beautiful mushroom grows directly out of wood and can be hard to see in the forest, blending into the shadows at the base of trees. The soft fuzzy, suede-like cap and red-streaked bulbous stem make it an easy mushroom for beginners. Some consider it a good edible with a tart, nutty flavor.
