Coprinus comatus – Shaggy Mane
Coprinus comatus and its relatives are fairly easy to identify because of their conical shape and tendency to turn to turn to black ink as they age. This is an edible species and fruits in yards, along common roads and in disturbed areas but must be cooked within a couple hours of being picked before it turns to an unpleasant liquid.
Benjamin Franklin used the ink from this mushroom to sign documents. The spores in the ink can still be seen under a microscope.
