May 11 COMC meeting with Dr. Steve Trudell in person!

Dr. Trudell’s presentation, Spring Mushrooms of the PNW is exactly what you need to hear right now. He is frequently a guest mycologist at the OMS (Portland’s club) spring foray near Suttle Lake in May, which makes him acutely aware of what fruits in Central Oregon in the spring. We have scheduled a club field trip for members the day before the meeting, so surely there will be specimens to handle on the tables. (There is currently room for more club members on this foray.)

Please join us for this important event on Thursday, May 11, at 6:30 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, 469 NW Wall St., downtown Bend. We will be across the street from our normal meeting space in St. Helen’s Hall. Watch for signs. 

Steve Trudell is a forest ecologist and itinerant educator, who has been hunting, photographing, and learning about mushrooms for over 40 years. Currently an affiliate curator at the University of Washington Herbarium, he received his BA and MA degrees in Geology from UC Santa Barbara and PhD in Forest Ecosystems Analysis from the UW. Author of Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest, Tricholomas of North America, and Mushrooms of Alaska’s National Forests, he has taught mycology, botany, and biology courses at the University of Washington, The Evergreen State College, Bastyr University, and Santa Barbara City College, as well as workshops at many NAMA and local club forays. His particular interest is in the roles that fungi play in forest carbon and nutrient cycling.

Some of you may already own and use Dr. Trudell’s first mushroom identification  book, but his new Mushrooms of the Pacific Northwest, Revised Edition, has been expanded to include many more fungi photos, species, updated names and identifying information. He will have some copies on hand for you to purchase.
